Question:
What are American school timetables like?

I'm from England, and I'm intrigued as to how American school timetables work. Like, what time do you start and finish school, when and how many breaks do you have... how many lessons a day?

I know most schools are different so, how does yours individually work?

Ours are - 8:25am, start school. Two one-hour lessons finishing at 9:25am, 10:25am respectively; administration with a tutor until 10:50am, first break until 11:25 - one hour lesson finishing at 12:25pm, another break lasting until 12:50pm and then two more one-hour lessons finishing at 2:50pm hometime:)

At my high school, we had 9 periods in the day. We started at 7:35 (it now starts at 7:20!) and we ended at 2:25 (it no ends at 2:00!), and each class was just over 40 minutes, but lunches are on 30 minutes. We have almost every class everyday. So, core courses like math, science, English, foreign language, and history are everyday, while gym, art, music, and other electives are either every other day or only for half of the year. Some students have studyhall (but some students like to take an extra elective (art, music, dance, etc.), for study hall you have a certain classroom and do you work, some schools let you leave or hang out in a lounge (mine did not). Classes had anywhere from 12 to 30 students, usually averaging around 20, but class sizes are higher now due to funding cuts.

I am not saying this is for everyone else, but at my school:

1st hour begins at 7:35. It lasts until 8:25.

Next class is 8:30-9:20, and the class after is 9:25- 10:35.

Then we have lunch from 10:35-11:05. We have 10 minutes between lunch and the next class to go to lockers, bathroom, etc.

After lunch classes are 11:15-12:20, 12:25-1:25, and 1:30 to 2:20.

The classes aren't exactly broken up evenly, but that's okay. The five minutes between each class is to go to lockers, bathroom, and get through the halls.

many high school throughout the united states go from like 7:00- 2:00

or 8:00-3:00

we don't really have breaks, just like 5-7 minutes to walk in between classes. Class length tends to be between 50-90 minutes depending on the school.

Lunch periods can be from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the school.

At our school we have the option to take zero period which starts at 7:20. We have this class every day. At 8:10 we have 10 minutes to get to class, which will be either 1st period or 4th. Then we get a 40 minute break for tutorial at 10:10, then either 2nd or 5th period starts(it changes every day). After 2nd or 5th we have lunch at 12:25, our next class starts at 1:15( either 3rd or 6th period), then we get out at 3. But everything's shorter on Wednesdays! It's pretty confusing..

My cousin lives in England. I'm so jealous. :(

Timetables -- or schedules, as they call them here -- vary from school to school, especially with all of the public school districts, private schools, and charters. The vast majority of schools in Los Angeles I know start at around 8 and 3:15 for public schools. They generally have 6 periods, meaning classes, each about 50 minutes, in addition to a set lunch period. There are passing periods in between classes to get from room to room. Sometimes, studious people have a 0 period to fit in more classes or grab an opportunity they wouldn't get otherwise; my sister takes a 0 period AP Economics class, and it starts at 7 am.

Schools that are charters like mine (I hate my school...it's really a big sham) can have wildly different schedules. The one I go to is a performing arts-/ robotics-focused school, so we have majors like in university and 8 or 9 periods (classes) a day, one of which should be a lunch hour. I am a music major with 8 periods so I start school at 8 and end at 4. I don't have a lunch because I scheduled my classes to fill up all 8 periods. The school is THAT boring. I have friends that go to other specialized schools that have block schedules (split classes between days) and some even start at 8:45.

Private schools generally have the best-built timetables. I'll give you links to the separate types of schools. :)
