Question:
Is 'joined up' handwriting taught to children across the UK now?

I'm wondering whether it is standard practice everywhere now. And if so is there a special font which the children can see to help them learn to write?

I've been doing work experience in schools. Most schools do "handwriting" practise which includes joined-up writing. I've found the less privileged schools which are under-staffed don't do it as often. But in most schools they now do it as part of the curriculum.

My son is in Year 3 and is writing in joined up handwriting, they started them off properly in Year 2 although the foundations were laid before then. Not sure about a "special font", he seemed to just pick it up while doing "loop patterns" etc., which I seem to remember from when I was at school, millions of years ago lol.

Yes, it is.

Teaching children to join up their letters begins in reception and it built up until they are in year 6.

Children in year 7 usually don't have handwriting lessons, which is why they then write their "i's" with little hearts on top of them, instead of just a dot.

You can ask your child's teacher to write a few words, joined up, like they teach them in school, then you can photocopy them and give your child extra practise.

I believe so, I know I was taught to write joined up when I was in primary school. I can't remember the special font though...

my 11 and 9 year old boys didn't start joining letters until year 1/2, but my youngest son (5) started learning to write letters with a 'flick' in reception. his joined writing has flown along in year 1, much faster than my older boys.

most teachers across the uk start to teach joined up handwriting from about christmas in year1 and lessons are carried n through out the rest of the primary years.

i currently teach out in spain in an international school and we start in reception. we use the nelson thornes scheme which is excellent. it has work books and text books which are really easy to use. i have also found back up sheets on:

No - we have stopped teaching children in the UK now. We had to because none of the teachers know anything.
