It's not feasible to do at home. From memory I think there is 40 hours of controlled assessment that you would have to do under the eye of a teacher - just not possible. Also students will already be preparing for the (6 hours? 10hours?) of exam based on a set theme which has to be taken at school. There is also more to Art than you seem to think - do you think you could walk into any other subject and pass the GCSE without any instruction?

If you really want another GCSE (and it's a bit late to start thinking of it, but 6.5 does sound incredibly few) then you need to sort it out soon - the entry deadline is 18 Feb. You would need to sort out exactly which syllabus and tier you want to take, and sort out with the school's exams officer how much it could cost. (The exam fee is around £30 but if they have to provide an invigilator just for you for 4 hours of invigilation then that is likely to add on another £30 or so). Have you considered General studies (see link) which is mostly based on general knowledge.?

If you are only helping, it isn't really up to you. If you are making the curriculum decisions, however, you need to realize that there are many different curriculum to choose from. You have to do more reading about those choices. If you are homeschooling 'for now' and expecting to put them back into the system, you would want to follow the system's curriculum and that information would be available from your local school system office. Part of the reason people choose to homeschool, however is to change from the curriculum in the school system. Make sure you are following the parent or legal guardian's choices. That is more important than following the school's choices.
