Question:
What do you think about these grades for junior year?

Okay, so I'm 16, and a junior in high school. In the past, I've never really studied, but always maintained straight A's. I always did all my homework. Now, though, I find myself just not caring as much. Don't get me wrong, I'm still doing fairly well--I've got an A- in English, A in history, A+ in my electives. It's just that I've always gotten all A+'s or all A+'s with just one A.

My main problem, I guess, is English. I'm not exactly comfortable with the A-. With all the things going on in my life, like a job, theatre, National Honor Society, Speech team, Interact club, and Destination Imagination, I just don't have time to read a twelve page packet and answer five questions for a homework grade of seven points. This is bringing my grade down, but because I do exceptionally well on writing assignments (I was the only one to get an A+ on our last paper), and tests, I still get a pretty decent grade. So what do you think about this? Is the sacrifice worth it, and will colleges still see this and like it?

Junior year tends to be tricky for some people. If you are looking at mid-high level colleges you will be fine. If you are looking at some of the higher level Ivy Leagues you will want to pull it through in SATs. I would suggest doing your English homework though, try to bring the grade up. Also, if you plan to go into a rigorous program at a tough school you will want to be able to at least handle a high school level workload. It gets worse.

I was very busy throughout highschool too. It sounds to me like you have always had a very good work ethic and study habits. The problem that you face is that you don't have enough time for homework and studying this year (which is a very high priority) due to your job and clubs . I think it is very important to make time for your homework and get your grades to a comfortable level, even if that means getting an A+ . Colleges care far more about grades then extra curricular activities so maybe quit one of your clubs or work less to make time for homework. Remember, there will be times when your teachers assign you more homework then to read a 12 page packet. Hopefully finding that time does not mean having to quit any extra curricular activities. I don't think sacrificing homework is worth it and college wont like the drop in grades... but thats just how i feel. You should figure out your priorities.

Well, I'm not going to lie. I have never been any good at school in my entire life until I tried extremely hard putting in 8-10 hours of homework every night. Anyways, back on topic. I actually think colleges will like that you are staying in the A range. Also, it depends on where you are going. Different colleges look at different things. You should research about the college and then answer this question for yourself.

What I was told by a UC Berkeley admissions counselor was that Berkeley doesn't want to see a person in a lot of clubs, they would rather see you president or actively involved in just one or two throughout your high school days.

I think your problem is the fact that you have way too many extracurriculars. I think having a job and being president of one club would make you look better on a college application than having way to many things going on.

I admire your grades, and your wording!!! i am only 12 i know, it sounds SO young to 16 so anyway, i just started middle school, and it is hard. i am in all AP classes so i get how you so much more to do than read!!! if you feel you need to raise your grade, than raise it but if you trust your instinct, than suit yourself with an A- it really depends if you are willing to take an A-. If it where me, i would raise your grade by test, daily assignments, and extra credit and projects. Ask you teacher for things to do to raise your grade!!!

It all depends on what school you go to. You clearly go to a school that is too easy for you. It's public right? If you go to a prep boarding school, and only genius' get A+'s, colleges will love it when people at my school get an A, but at your school they most likely won't care to much. It is good though to get all A's. If you aren't comfortable with the A-, just work on it a bit thats all.

Umm I don't know where you live but in most states they don't use +'s any more for A's... So it would be weird that you got an A+.

But other then that colleges look at mainly two things, your SAT's and grades. So if you get at least a 27 on the SAT then your good.

oh boy. haha youre grades are almost perfect! and thats good, because colleges are more concerned about how you did in your junoir year. but instead of using letter grades, i think they use percentage grades, so maybe concentrate on those.

and as for the grade in which your getting an A-, just study a littl eharder in that, but dont le your gaurd down on the other classes.

youre doing fine, hon, keep up the good work.

What sacrifice?

I think you really should improve the English..Maybe just start with English hw, and do...History last! History's not important!!! Unless you're going to a school that concentrates on history...

yes colleges will like it unless your grades keep going down. I'm in high school (9) and am having the same problem as you, but all my teachers keep telling me not to worry and just to do my best and try my hardest so I will give you the same advice. Most colleges will in fact love your grades.

A-, A+, what's the difference? It's hard for a lot of students just to maintain a B. You should be proud of yourself for that and not worry about the plus or minus.

Wow you inspired me to work harder and focus even more in school. You are absolutely fine. With all those extra curricular clubs you joined Colleges will be pleased to see them. It shows that you are a well rounded intelligent person. Good Luck!!!

i don't think the colages will care if u have an A- because u have all those other things. I get Bs and i'm on honor roll and lots of other programs, try not to get b's or c's because u'll always be thinking about them and u'll have sloppier work because ur thinking about that b
2008-10-14 18:39:53 UTC
the colleges will like it. Its an excellent thing to do extra outer curricular activities, like u did. colleges look for a well rounded person. so its a good sacrifice to make but keep watching your grade though,
2008-10-14 18:39:37 UTC
Ummm...maybe you should be concerned more about your mental stability instead of your grades. Stop trying to show off and brag, you have all A's so you know you're fine...I always hated it when kids in high school would show off and boast about their grades. I never did lol

Those are fine, of course you want as much as possible, but that is very acceptable. you should try to do your hw first though, school comes first. find the time. colleges will love you, b/c most people dont have strait a's.

2008-10-14 18:39:25 UTC
i think that it is amazing also most collages look to see if you participate in extra cricular activites so if you have all A's and are still in extra cricular activites you should definitly be fine.
